People
scatter roasted soy beans in order to drive away Japanese
goblins (bad luck) and draw in happiness.
Usually
one of the family member puts a goblin mask on, and others
throw roasted soy beans at him/her. People collect and eat
the same amount of beans as their age, expressing the wish
for good health. ( I was a goblin in our family a couple of
times. It HURTS!! If I were a bad luck goblin, I would go
away from the family for sure!)
